Happy Monday

Here's something hilarious and heart-warming to start your day. We love morning times in the Kauri Community!

We love this song from Go Noodle - you can see more great songs here (and perhaps sign up for some fun singing times in the holidays!)

We're QuadBlogging!

We're super excited because this week we start QuadBlogging! This is our first time QuadBlogging and we're really looking forward to reading lots of great blog posts. We're going to use our 'Feed and Read' time to read the other blogs and make a comment on them.

Here's how QuadBlogging works:

  • In the first week (this week) we will all read and comment on the first blog in our group: Room 12 Allenton School
  • In the second week (next week) we will all read and comment on the second blog in our group: Room 4 St Joseph's School
  • In the third week (after the holidays!) we will all read and comment on the third blog in our group: Room 9 Gordonton School
  • And in the final week the other schools in our group will come and read and comment on our blog. We have to wait a long time for our turn!

We've made some (small) changes to our blog to get ready for our visitors. Have you noticed them?! We changed our background picture and we added some writing about ourselves so our visitors know who we are.

Them bones, them bones, them dancing bones

Today we talked about bones and we sang a dancing bones song.

We know we can see our bones if we use an x-ray machine. We made x-ray pictures of our hands. Did you know there are 206 bones in your body? Babies have 270 bones in their bodies. Altogether in our classroom, there are 8858 bones. That's a lot of bones! There are over 90,000 bones in our whole school.

We counted the bones in our fingers - there are three bones in each finger, and two in our thumb, so that makes fourteen altogether. We know that there are three bones in our leg - and we know Tyler broke his leg, but we don't know which bone. We will ask Tyler to show us his real x-ray, and we might be able to put a picture of it on our blog!

We thought bones were made of wood, or perhaps metal or plastic, but actually they are made from calcium. You get calcium from milk or yoghurt or cheese, so we need to eat lots of those things to make our bones grow strong. And look at all the other things that have calcium in them too!

Arbor Day

Today is Arbor Day. We all came to school in our green clothes. This afternoon we are going to help plant some trees and plants and to look after our gardens. This morning we measured the biggest Kauri tree in the world - Tane Mahuta.

We stood in a big circle and held hands to see how round his trunk is. We drew a big chalk circle around us, but it got washed off in the rain. We could all fit inside the circle with heaps of room left over!
We lay down in a big long line to see how tall he is. Wow! Liam was at the beginning with his feet right by the Wharenui, and Finn was at the end - way past the dental clinic! The big kids in Ti Kouka came to see what we were doing and were really surprised. Miss Allchurch took this photo from upstairs in the Totara block.
We sang a song about little trees in our garden. Mr Morris paid us a surprise visit to play his guitar while we sang. You can listen to it here. We think our song is awesome - have a listen and let us know what you think!

Miss Cullen's Maths Group

The squares have been working really hard over the last few weeks. We've been learning to recognise numerals and words from zero to ten and practising writing these. We played a bowling game to show off our recording skills and we've used whiteboards and chalk to practise with. We made this cool video to show how much we've learnt.
Tau Koe, Lily, Micah, Dom, Jessie, Casey, Jen and Ashton. It's been great working with you and I look forward to seeing what you learn next.
Check out the video here.

Discovery Friday - Camels

On Wondering Wednesday Clark wondered "why do camels live in hot deserts?" Today we talked about camels for Discovery Friday. We found out about all sorts of special features that camels have to help them live in the desert. Jessie told us about the time she rode on a camel. We drew pictures of camels and talked about hot and cold colours as well.
We made a movie with our camel pictures and our camel facts. It's awesome! Check it out here, and please leave us a comment below.

Wednesday's Superstar Writer

Wow! Yesterday there was a big storm - look what Kyan wrote about it! Listen to Kyan reading his story. Great work, Kyan! Kyan told us that the lightning hit his neighbour's tree right next to his house - that sounds really scary.

Tuesday's Superstar Writer

Look at this awesome story that Seth wrote with Amy! Great work Seth, we love the way you have used all of your letters. Listen to Seth reading his story below.

Soccer skills with Miss Cullen

We had so much fun on Thursday being out in the sunshine with Miss Cullen. We loved running around and kicking the soccer ball with our friends.

Go Angel! Baxter is ready for your big kick!

Mrs Quinn loved being outside with us too! We look forward to another lesson this week.

Cross Country

All lined up, ready to start.
On Thursday we had our school cross-country. We went to Preston Downs and we had to run around Kirrin Island. We all ran very fast (even Mrs Sands!) and we ran all the way without stopping.

Miss Allchurch, Miss Cullen and Mrs Sands were super proud of our perseverance.

Take your marks, get set, go!
Great running, Abby!

Taylan's Dad took this really great video of us running. Thanks Lyndon!

Welcome to our blog...

Hooray! The Kauri Community have a brand new blog. Today we have been talking about different ways to communicate. We learnt some sign language, and wrote our names in Braille. We wrote letters to our friends and family and we looked at the fax machine in the office. We made this blog to share our artwork and the things we do at school. We are going to use our blog to communicate with our friends and family who live far away. We would love for you to comment if you have visited our blog! (And watch this space, we have lots to share!)
